Michigan Auctioneers Gather for Annual Conference in Kalamazoo

 

Auctioneers gathered January 26-28 for the Michigan State Auctioneers Association Annual Conference.  Over 160 Auctioneers, support staff, families & exhibitors gathered for Education, Fellowship and Fun at the 2010 Michigan State Auctioneers Association 59th Annual Conference. This year’s event was held at the Radisson Hotel & Suites in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The conference provides attendees with numerous opportunities to network with fellow auctioneers and auction firms, learn from experts, compete with their marketing designs and test their talent in the Michigan Auctioneer Championships and Ringman Championships!!

 

Several speakers highlighted the event, including the President elect of the National Auctioneers Association and one of the highest rated speakers ever, John Hamilton from Pennsylvania, who taught auctioneers some tips and tricks to great negotiating.  There was a significant BUZZ around the convention that was most certainly a large draw to a large number of new auctioneers and first time attendees. MSAA Auctioneers were honored by guest and Hall of Fame Country Music Star, Auctioneer Leroy Van Dyke.   Some of his best known works were for his musical talents and abilities, but to Auctioneers, Leroy Van Dyke is one of their own, an Auctioneer and leader in the industry.  They were glued to their seats as he spoke about his life in the auction business and many of the reasons he was so successful.

 

Auctioneers from across the state were awarded for their outstanding accomplishments in marketing. There was a total of approximately 140 entries in the 40 categories competed for in the coveted marketing competition. There was also an Auction of the Year Award, which is chosen from all entries.

Testing their talent in the Michigan Auctioneer Championship were 22 Men and Women Auctioneers. Contestants compete in a bid calling and interview portion to test their knowledge of the auction business. The 6 finalists were Peter Gehres (Hilliard, OH), Joseph A. Phillips (Fort Gratiot, Mich.), Kelly Merryman (Sparta, Mich), Robert McAdams (Martinsville, Ind.), Dan Stone (Carleton, Mich.), Lavern Yutzy (Charlotte, Mich.). At the end of the night, Peter Gehres of Hilliard, Ohio was crowned the 2010 Michigan Auctioneer Champion.  Peter will represent Michigan in the International Auctioneer Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina in July.

 

Also highlighted during the event was the MSAA Ringman Competition. 11 Contestants were tested on their "ringing abilities". The contest evaluated ringmen in the following areas: product knowledge; crowd control; performance; communication and relaying bids to the Auctioneer; appearance and communication and interaction with other ringmen. At the end of the day, Douglas J. Heuker of Marion, Michigan walked away with the title.

 

Friday evening of the Event hosts the annual President’s Banquet and Auctioneers Making a Difference Fundraiser Auction. Art M. Smith of Cedar Springs was inducted as the 2010 MSAA President. The New Officers in the MSAA are Timothy H. Narhi (Byron), President elect; Scott Vander Kolk Jr. (Dorr), Vice President; Rebecca Lawrence (Traverse City), Secretary/Treasurer; Joseph A. Phillips (Fort Gratiot), Chairman of the Board. In all, there are 13 Directors and Officers.

 

Steven L. Reeser of Okemos, Michigan and Timothy H. Narhi of Byron, Michigan were honored for their extraordinary service to the Auction Industry by being inducted into the MSAA Hall of Fame. Special recognition was also given to Edward G. King as he was honored by outgoing President Joseph A Phillips with the 2010 President’s Award of Distinction. Also honored were David Helmer (Saline, Mich) and Rachel Gingell (Lapeer, Mich.), who were presented with the 2010 Scholarship awards.

 

Many MSAA Members will travel to the National Auctioneers Association Conference & Show in July in Greensboro, North Carolina. This event will showcase the International Auctioneer Championships, where many MSAA Members will compete.  January 2011 will host the 60th Anniversary Conference of the Michigan State Auctioneers Association.  This special event will be held in Lansing, Michigan.
